This channel is best described in the words of @Threadsinger "Like a "Today I Found Out" if it was hosted by Deadpool."
Chris Boden is a passionate polymath with a storied life. He founded a little Makerspace that turned out to be rather popular, published a few books, made a few videos that some people liked, survived Federal prison, and has lived a life through a lens throwing lightning bolts in front of thousands of people for decades. He’s a professional weirdo and rational optimist who is trying to balance misanthropy with philanthropy.
This is the edge of the rabbit hole, beyond this point there be great beasties and dangerous adventures.

Do these have flashing lights? I was almost home from an all day trip and saw multicolor flashing lights in the air. 3AM, alone in the countryside, partly worried I would be alien abducted I parked underneath them and saw they were boxes hanging from/wrapped around the wires.
Cool! Do they use some sort of carrier wave to communicate with central base?
Luckily in my travels of electrical hell i have never encountered this one. Although plenty of rats nests and creepy crawlers
How does it measure voltage?
Pattern recognition is common to every human, not just the ones on the spectrum
I put 69kV fault indicators on MOLBAB switches for about 8 years, just recently started installing 69kV reclosers. They started out looking like the ones in the video but we swapped them all out (about 1300 locations) for ones that connect ph-ph. They look insane but have a lot more functionality and reliability. With what we're currently installing, it's pretty clear they want a grid that runs itself.
My cranial catalog is getting filled with information on horse drawn farm equipment because I'm trying to get into the business of restoration& remanufacture of them now you don't see the farm implements on a daily basis to know if something isn't right but the wagons show up in pop culture just take for instance the first episode of season 4 of the chosen mirroring mark 6 : 14-29 of the Bible where John the Baptist loses his head there is a fleeting moment early in the show where a carriage with elliptical leafs springs passes, leaf springs were invented sometime around 1750 in France and did not have common manufacturer until the 1850s when literally anyone especially a poor average individual like portrayed in that scene not someone of the upper classes could afford finally hit the market even as a upper class that's still 1800 years to early for leaf springs to be in that scene
We need the prison story duck
More of a stop gap to the real problem.
I am a nerd, I like to learn and understand the world around me best as I can. Electricity and electronics are the one thing I gave up on understanding. Dont touch the spicy wire, something something firehose metaphor, and thats about it for my understanding of the finer details of electricity.
Cool 👍🏻. Can anyone here, say how these are different to the Heimdall Balls?
Lol, it's perfect.
i wish they would cut the trees back more. or help those of of on fixed income be proactive instead of 3 days without power being reactive.
"Curiosity never killed anything but a few hours" - this is golden!
I would call myself a lineman, but is that the right word i only worked on the internet lines i havnt messed with power(on purpose)
I'm no electrical engineer. Electricity is pretty much just magic to me. I have never once thought about what a power plant operator might be *doing* at work. And I've gotten by so far, thank you very much, without knowing that power plants had to sync with the grid like this. And yet... this was one of the most dramatic scenes I've ever seen play out. Amazing. It's probably no coincidence that RUclips showed me this random video while I was going down a filmmaking-and-drama video rabbit hole
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
TWATS! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sweet smoker hellya!!!!!!!!
Y'all autties are like super humans. 😊
I loved the script in this one - especially because I could relate to it
A lot of smart grid equipment has these sensors integrated and reports to DCC (or whatever your utility calls it). Two for one!
Am I the only one that had to search a video of rabbit's nose?
Ooooh, inductively powered...
Haha burnt ends.
So, how long before a conspiracy is promulgated?
"If you want to save America, get a job in the trades." What are the trades paying? There's gotta be some way to attract people besides begging. The country needs electricity but if electricity needs an enthusiastic workforce, then maybe the world doesn't need the country.
Faulty lighting arresters on the overhead lines can be difficult to determine if they are faulty sometimes they leak electricity just enough to trigger ground fault relays or low rated fuse elements but not enough to show visible damage . It's always good to find a burnt tree limb on or below the hv overhead .
Not good for cannabis growers
My local utility recently installed solar powered remote monitors on the single phase 7.2kv line that feeds us and 8 other customers. They installed monitors on every second pole along the circuit. They are mounted on the pole near the power line. I assume they are indirectly measuring the voltage by monitoring the electric field capacitively, measuring the current by monitoring the magnetic field, or both. They don't appear to have direct connections to anything but the ground wire.
Not even sure how i found this guy but i stay for the dad jokes and puns. Even learn a little bit as i go.
Yes
Fun fact, these are some of the devices that I have to cooperate with! In ham radio, the 630-meter band (472-479 kHz) and 2200 meter band (135.7-135.8 kHz, yes, 100 Hz of bandwidth), in the US, you need to notify the Utilities Technology Council about your intent to transmit on them, with your location, and give them 30 days to respond. Because some of those devices (or even some electric meters, I believe), may use those frequencies *on the power lines* to communicate back to a central location. Unsurprisingly power lines make *great* low frequency antennas. *And that's pretty cool!*
Can these not be installed at or as the isolators at the pole?
I'd be curious to see how reliable this is in rural areas. Not because of the device itself but because of how terrible rural cell networks are. The added throughput on already outdated towers could cause problems, I'd think. Also, how the heck does this thing manage to send/receive any sort of radio(cell) signal if it's induction powered? Is interference not an issue?
That's what smart meters were for I thought
I've always been curious, how much current generally flows on these higher voltage transmission lines?
Do you have any ppe equipment in your shop you’d want to sell?
Are dinky dangles what we call current transformers in Australia? Although they do look high voltage, love ya work legend 👍🏻🇦🇺😊
Very interesting. Never seen them, but I’ll be on the lookout for them.
Uhh, try the screws?
Don’t wanna be around an electrified wrecking ball if that line ever comes down
I thumbs up'd simply because I too love wet beavers.
KNIPEX NOT KINIPEX
These are actually kind of outdated, the electrical industry uses API meters for far more accurate outage and trouble shooting data, and they now make fuse cutout replacements that electronically disconnects power and reads data like voltage and amperage.
The shotgun
That looked like a hundred amp fuse - way too big
Are you a ham radio operator?
Never saw these things in my neck of the woods across the pond, I'll be looking for them
Wow really cool indeed
